Citing a new passion for his job, Marvin “Doc” Cheatham has reversed his decision to resign as head of the Baltimore branch of the NAACP.
“I?m staying on,” he said. “I?ve been energized.”
Cheatham attributes his decision to stay to his attendance of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People?s annual convention this month in Detroit.
“Meeting people from around the country reinvigorated me,” he said.
Cheatham announced on June 7 that he was retiring from the volunteer job as president, citing stress and overwhelming demands.
“I?m burned out, I need a rest,” he said at the time.
But the Baltimore branch recently picked up two prestigious awards at the NAACP?s national convention, held July 7-12, including best branch of its size nationwide and best publication.
“I?m ecstatic; we had discussions with a lot of branches from around the country and they look upon us as an encouragement for them,” he said.
Cheatham said his change of heart will be formally announced next week at the organization?s monthly meeting.
“I love what I do and with the assistance of the leadership I am going to take this branch to the next level,” he said.
