Rep. Mike Coffman announces divorce

Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Colo., and his wife, Colorado Attorney General Cynthia Coffman, have announced their decision to divorce.

“After much soul searching we have made the painful decision to get a divorce,” the pair said in a statement. “This has been a difficult choice for both of us and we ask our friends and supporters for their understanding. We have a great deal of respect for each other and will remain each other’s strongest supporters in whatever we do in our continued service to the people of Colorado.”

As first reported by the Colorado Springs Gazette, the couple said they reached the decision over the weekend.

Since 2009, Mike Coffman has represented the state’s 6th Congressional District, one of the most competitive districts in the country. In his last two elections, Coffman has fought off challenges from a former speaker of the Colorado house, and a former Colorado Senate president.

Cynthia Coffman has served as the state’s attorney general since 2015, and has been mentioned as a gubernatorial contender for 2018 in a crowded field that already holds two sitting House members, Ed Perlmutter and Jared Polis, both Democrats.
