Sen. Blumenthal warns Trump Jr. about ignoring subpoena: ‘Prison is the only answer’

In light of the Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee subpoenaing Donald Trump Jr., Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said if the president’s son chooses to ignore it, then he ought to be put in jail.

“If he fails to answer, he ought to be put in jail. If he fails to comply with a lawful subpoena, he has no privilege. Prison is the only answer,” Blumenthal told reporters on Thursday.

Trump Jr. is being brought in front of the committee again in order to answer more questions about real estate plans for a Trump Organization project in Moscow. Blumenthal says the answers he gave to the committee in 2017 are in conflict with the report from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

“There are a number of responses he gave that are challengeable based on the truth,” Blumenthal said, according to The Hill. “There are a number of areas that need to be scrutinized by the Intelligence Committee. His responses in the Judiciary Committee are certainly one of those areas.”

“I was in the room and my clear impression was that his answers were deliberately misleading and false. He said he was only peripherally aware of the negotiations in Moscow for Trump Tower there when apparently he was briefed extensively,” he said.

Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., has been heavily criticized by President Trump’s allies, with one anonymous person saying the subpoena is an “obvious PR stunt from a so-called ‘Republican’ Senator too cowardly to stand up to his boss Mark Warner and the rest of the resistance Democrats on the committee.”
