Fairfax County opened a free park-and-ride lot at Old Keane Mill Road and I-95 in Springfield, providing 277 parking spaces for people who share car rides on the interstate.
Located on the site of an old Circuit City store and movie theater, people were already using the vacant lot to park, but had been doing so illegally, Springfield District Supervisor Jeff McKay told the Fairfax Station Connection. The new county lot provides a legal way to park and share rides.
Riders commonly park at the lot and take turns filling up cars with enough strangers to give the vehicle access to the much faster HOV lanes. McKay said that the county can’t endorse the practice for liability reasons, but that’s essentially what the lot was created for.
The county wants to eventually turn the lot into a 1,000 space parking garage.
