Ted Cruz brands Fauci the ‘most dangerous bureaucrat’ in American history

Sen. Ted Cruz called Dr. Anthony Fauci the “most dangerous bureaucrat in the history of the country.”

Cruz painted the infectious disease expert as self-aggrandizing, likening Fauci’s recent claim that he represented science to when Louis XIV, the Sun King of France, said, “I am the state.”

“I don’t think anyone has hurt science, has hurt the credibility of the CDC, has hurt the credibility of doctors more than Dr. Fauci,” Cruz said on Fox News Tuesday. “Because throughout this pandemic, he’s been dishonest, he’s been political, [and] he’s been partisan, and the American people know it!”

The Texas Republican said he found it “striking” how “the most dangerous bureaucrat in the country” has hurt doctors’ credibility by refusing to discuss the substance of Republicans’ concerns about U.S. funding of gain-of-function research and instead “just screamed ‘liars’ and everything.”

“There is a lot of circumstantial evidence to suggest that the U.S. government participated in funding research modifying coronaviruses that could well have led to COVID-19, and if that’s true, that’s stunning and indefensible. We know the Chinese government has enormous culpability, but there’s a real possibility the American government under Dr. Fauci does as well, and that’s what he doesn’t want to address,” he said.

Fauci has hit back at criticism from the Right, slamming the “noise” from Republicans such as Cruz and Sen. Rand Paul, who have accused him of lying about funding gain-of-function research. He claimed criticism of him stems from the fact that he represents science during a Sunday interview with CBS News’s Face the Nation.

Cruz’s Monday night interview marked the second time this week he has gone after Fauci. He wrote on social media on Sunday that Fauci is “an unelected technocrat who has distorted science and facts in order to exercise authoritarian control over millions of Americans.”
