President Trump said some states should consider opening schools for the last few weeks of the academic year.
“We want [states to reopen]. We recommend that they do it as quickly as possible, but safely. We want everyone to be safe,” Trump said during a press conference on Monday.
“I think you’re seeing that. You’re seeing a lot of governors get out, and they want to open it up,” he continued. “Many are thinking about their school system. Not a long way to go in the school system right now, for this season for this year, but I think you will see a lot of schools open up, even if it’s for a very short period of time. I think it would be a good thing.”
The president added, “Because, as you see, in terms of what this vicious virus goes after, young people seem to do very well. Young people seem to do very well, so I know that there are some governors that aren’t necessarily ready to open up their states, but they may be ready to open up the school systems.”
Many governors have announced that schools will not be reopening during this academic year because of the coronavirus. While very few children have had severe reactions to the virus, they can still spread it.
“That’s their choice,” Trump said of governors reopening schools. “But the word is safety. Rapid, but safety.”
