50-year-old woman becomes mother after decade of efforts

A 50-year-old woman just got the chance to experience giving birth for the first time in her life.

Susie Troxler and her husband, Tony, welcomed their first child into the world. Lily Troxler was born on Sept. 29, 2021, weighing 5 pounds and 12.8 ounces.

“I don’t even have the words; it’s surreal,” Susie told TODAY Parents. “I still can’t believe it. I spent so much time being me, first, and then being a wife. So now, this idea of being a mom is; it’s still a ‘wow’ for me.”

Susie, a licensed psychologist in High Point, North Carolina, says that she has attempted to have a child for almost 10 years. Susie claims that she was not aware there were any fertility issues at first. “I was working, he was working, and we were just busy.”

After not receiving a positive pregnancy test for eight years, the couple grew concerned. After expressing her concerns, Susie was referred to the Carolinas Fertility Institute in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The physicians at the institute diagnosed Susie with fibroids, a series of noncancerous growths in the uterus. After a surgery removed the growths, she was also diagnosed with endometriosis, a gynecological condition where endometrial-type tissue grows outside the uterus. The doctors also expressed concerns about medical risks attributed to the couple’s growing age.

Tony and Susie were determined to continue trying despite all of the medical issues. The couple attempted to use an egg donation, leaving only two viable embryos. The first one did not take, leaving Tony and Susie with one last chance to try.

And that last attempt, that final embryo, was successful. Susie says that her pregnancy and her daughter’s birth were uneventful. However, she did have to undergo a C-section on Sept. 29.

Susie and Tony have now been parents for two months. While the couple are still struggling to get sleep, Susie says she enjoys every moment of motherhood.

“You roll with it, because it’s so totally worth it,” Susie told TODAY Parents. “I actually cherish those moments at three in the morning, when I’m sitting there rocking her, and she’s sitting there looking at me with those bright eyes, not the least bit sleepy. Because you don’t get them back.”
