Minnesota state Rep. Ilhan Omar won the Democratic primary for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District over former state House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher and state Sen. Patricia Torres Ray, among others, the Associated Press projected Tuesday.
The district, which covers Minneapolis and nearby suburbs, is expected to remain in Democratic hands come November, when Omar will face Republican nominee Jennifer Zielinski.
A House candidate in Hawaii backed by self-described “democratic socialist” Ocasio-Cortez, who defeated longtime Rep. Joe Crowley in the June Democratic primary for New York’s 14th Congressional District, was defeated Saturday.
Ellison, who is facing accusations of domestic violence against a former girlfriend, won the Democratic primary for Minnesota attorney general Tuesday. Ellison denies the claims.
