Students were terrified Monday over reports of a person perched in a tree who fired a pellet gun at two students at an Elkridge bus stop last week.
“It?s scary ? these are small students, and they were scared about the way he looked,” said Mayfield Woods Middle School principal Susan Griffith.
“I think that?s a pretty frightening case ? isn?t that a sniper situation?” said Ann DeLacy, president of the Howard County Education Association.
“Anytime you have someone hiding in a tree shooting at innocent folks, that?s scary. What?s going to stop them from using a regular gun?”
As a precaution, Griffith said an administrator has been stationed at the bus stop in the morning, and police surveillance in the area will continue until the case is resolved.
Howard police said no suspects have been identified Monday.
Griffith sent out a third letter to parents Monday regarding the situation. The incidents occurred Wednesday and Thursday at the same spot ? the corner of Joetta Drive and Deep Run Boulevard around 7:45 a.m., she said.
“The police were in this neighborhood all day Friday and throughout the weekend,” she wrote.
The culprit wore a camouflage outfit, black ski mask and black boots, said school system spokeswoman Patti Caplan.
A sixth-grader was struck in the eyelid Wednesday and suffered a welt, but no serious injury occurred, Griffith said. A police report was filed that day.
More students saw the shooter Thursday, and another sixth-grader reported being shot in the arm by a person fitting a similar description, Griffith said.
By Friday, police were at the scene in the morning and since then nobody has been reported being shot.
Deep Run Elementary School also has been warned of the situation because of its near proximity to the area, Griffith said.
