Victims identified in Wheaton hit-run

The husband and wife struck in a hit-and-run crash in Wheaton have been identified.

The woman, 39-year-old Maria De la Paz, was killed when she was struck by a BMW after she got off a bus near Veirs Mill Road and Centerhill Street shortly before 9:45 p.m. Monday. Her husband, 43-year-old Demetrio Gomez Sanchez, was also hit, and remains in critical condition, police said Thursday.

The driver initially stopped, then fled the scene, according to Montgomery County police.

Police said officers found the striking vehicle and its driver nearby. Police identified the driver as 29-year-old Pierre Michel, of Silver Spring. He was not hurt.
