Bystanders reportedly taunt Philly cops amid live shooting

Bystanders reportedly taunted police officers responding to an active shooter incident in North Philadelphia on Wednesday evening.

“I mentioned this at 10 and since I was harassed during that live shot, I’ll mention it here too,” tweeted CBS Philly reporter and anchor Alexandria Hoff. “A major moment of disappointment this evening was watching a crowd of people taunt police officers, laughing and yelling at them in the midst of the gunfire.”

Video also surfaced of what appeared to be a sizable crowd of people jeering and throwing objects at Philadelphia police. It remains unclear if this was the same incident described by Hoff, though the presence of a “Precious Babies Learning Academy” bus in the video suggests that it took place near the shooting. The Philly-based day care center has a location near where gunfire broke out.

Police were serving a warrant related to narcotics in the 3700 block of North 15th Street when the suspect opened fire at about 4:30 p.m., according to police. Six officers were wounded in the ensuing shootout, though none with life-threatening injuries, according to the Philadelphia police commissioner.

The incident continued well into the night as the alleged gunman, 36-year-old Maurice Hill, barricaded himself in a residence. He surrendered shortly after midnight.
