Prosecution rests case in poisoned doctor trial

HOUSTON (AP) — Prosecutors have rested their case in the assault trial of a woman accused of poisoning her colleague-lover.

The final two witnesses testified for prosecutors Wednesday in the trial of Dr. Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo, a breast cancer doctor accused of spiking researcher George Blumenschein’s coffee in 2013 with a chemical found in antifreeze. Blumenschein survived.

It wasn’t immediately known if Gonzalez-Angulo’s defense team would present any witnesses.

Prosecutors allege Gonzalez-Angulo’s relationship with Blumenschein turned into a “fatal attraction” after he spurned her in favor of love rival Evette Toney. Defense attorneys argue others, including Toney, may be responsible.

But Toney denied the allegation. She told a Harris County jury Tuesday that Blumenschein chose not to tell authorities immediately after drinking the tainted coffee for fear Gonzalez-Angulo might hurt him again.
