Two police shot in ambush-style attack in Philadelphia

Two police officers and four civilians were shot Friday night in Philadelphia in what reports describe as an ambush-style attack.

One Philadelphia Police Department office and one University of Pennsylvania police officer were shot Friday night by “an individual driven by hatred,” according to Philadelphia Police Department public information office John Stanford.

At least one civilian victim died, according to local news reports, and the suspect was also killed in a shootout with police.

Police commissioner Richard Ross said in a press conference that the shooter left behind a note expressing hatred for police.

The shootout reportedly began in West Philadelphia when a gunman ambushed a police officer in her car. Later the gunman was pursued on foot by police and took hostages before ultimately being killed.

The shooting already attracted national attention Saturday morning. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump tweeted out that his “thoughts and prayers” were with the Philadelphia and Penn police.
