A 23-year-old man accused of murdering a Baltimore City police officer has been charged with two counts of assault against at least one jail employee, court records show.
Details of the new charges against Brandon Grimes, of the 800 block of Cator Avenue, remain under seal because he has yet to be served with a warrant issued on Jan. 1, prosecutors said. The assault allegedly happened on Dec. 17.
Grimes? murder case, in which he?s accused of killing Baltimore Police Officer Troy Chesley last year, was postponed Thursday for a sixth time.
On Jan. 9, 2007, Chesley, 34, was slipping a key in his front door when he was shot. Chesley, who was not in uniform, returned fire, and police tracked down Grimes within hours at St. Agnes Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for a gunshot to the leg. Police said he sustained the wound during the attempted robbery of Chesley.
Prosecutors are seeking a penalty of life without the possibility of parole against Grimes.
At Thursday?s hearing, Grimes wore a yellow shirt with jeans. His leg showed no sign of the previous injury.
Chesley?s mother, who cried throughout the hearing, declined to comment.
Outside the Baltimore City Circuit Courthouse, Grimes? girlfriend, Shaleita Venable, 26, said she believes he is being made into a “scapegoat.”
“He?s done other bad things, but he didn?t do this,” she said of Chesley?s slaying. “They won?t believe him, because they already made up their minds.”
Venable said she had been with Grimes about five minutes before Chesley was shot and her boyfriend was injured by the same men who shot the officer.
“Shots rang out,” she said. “He said it was some guys in a black car. He ain?t taking no plea deal, because he didn?t do it.”
Grimes is currently charged with six different offenses, including two handgun cases that have been postponed 11 and 10 times, respectively.
One of the handgun cases is expected to go to trial today, prosecutors.
Police said Grimes had 17 prior arrests when he was charged with Chesley?s murder.
The new assault charges are the third case brought against Grimes since he was charged with killing Chesley. He also has been charged in two separate attempted murder cases.
