High schoolers on school trip discover hidden cameras in hotel room

Police are investigating after a group of high school students found recording devices in a hotel room while on a school trip to Minnesota.

Students at Madison East High School in Wisconsin made the startling discovery earlier this month while on a three-day trip to Minneapolis. A staff member at the school was placed on leave as “a precautionary measure,” a district representative said.

The recording devices were discovered in rooms at the Minneapolis Hyatt Regency while the teenagers were at a conference. The hotel said that it searched other rooms for cameras, but it didn’t find any except the ones inside the rooms of the students.

“As confirmed by local authorities at this time, it does not appear that anyone associated with the hotel is involved in the situation,” the hotel chain said in a statement.

Officials with the Madison Metropolitan School District were notified about the discovery on Dec. 8, and police were notified.

Brendan Kearny, interim principal, has not revealed many details but promised that whoever placed the cameras in the room would be held responsible.

“Out of respect for the students and families affected, and in the interest of preserving the integrity of the police investigation, I am unable to share many details with you at this time,” Kearny said in a letter to parents. “I want you to know that we will continue to do everything we can to protect our students and to see that anyone responsible for harming them is held accountable.”

No arrests have been made since the incident.
