WATCH: Elon Musk says marijuana puff with Joe Rogan led to ‘a lot of backlash’

Telsa CEO Elon Musk divulged the “nutty” aftermath of his decision to smoke marijuana while appearing on Joe Rogan’s podcast.

Musk told the Full Send podcast this week that he was on The Joe Rogan Experience in 2018, when he admitted he was not a regular marijuana user and asked if it was legal.

The SpaceX CEO explained he took a puff and passed it back but that it was enough to cause the federal government to give both his employees and him random drug tests “to prove I’m not a drug addict.”

“I did get a lot of backlash,” Musk told Full Send. “It was pretty nutty, actually.”

Musk explained that because SpaceX has a federal contract and marijuana is still illegal federally, scrutiny increased.

“SpaceX competitors were like, ‘Hey, why don’t you do anything? Look at him brazenly smoking weed on Joe Rogan’s podcast,’” Musk said. “I didn’t think I’d get that much backlash. The consequences for me and for SpaceX were not good.”

Musk said he apologized to his employees.
