Joe Biden leads Democrats in new Michigan poll

A new poll shows that former Vice President Joe Biden is the leading Democratic choice among registered voters in Michigan.

The Emerson College Polling survey has Biden sitting at 40 percent, with Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., trailing at 23 percent. Democratic senators Kamala Harris of California and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts came in at 12 and 11 percent, respectively. The rest of the 2020 hopefuls registered in the single digits.

Biden has yet to formally enter the race for president, although he is expected to announce a run in the coming weeks. Sanders, Harris, and Warren have all announced that they are running.

The poll, released Sunday, asked voters who their second choice would be if Biden doesn’t join the race. Sanders came out on top at 42 percent, Harris polled 23 percent, and Warren garnered 18 percent of the potential electorate.

The survey comes on the heels of a poll released Saturday showing Biden and Sanders are in a dead heat for first choice among likely Iowa caucus-goers, taking 27 percent and 25 percent respectively.

Michigan is a critical state for Democrats in 2020. President Trump won the state by a close margin in the 2016 presidential election.
