Small-plane crash in Laurel seriously injures Howard man

A Howard man was seriously injured when his small, homemade plane crashed off the Baltimore-Washington Parkway in Laurel.

Patrick G. Dean, 42, of Clarksville, was flying solo when the aircraft went down around 4:30 p.m. Saturday in a wooded area near Anne Arundel?s border with PrinceGeorge?s.

He sustained serious injuries, officials said.

Dean was apparently having mechanical problems with the plane before it went down, said Sgt. Robert Lachance, of the U.S. Park Police, who handled the initial investigation because the land belongs to the National Park Service.

Dean was taken by helicopter to a hospital. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, Lachance said.

Anne Arundel Fire Department Battalion Chief Matthew Tobia said medic units also transported a 62-year-old bystander to Laurel Regional Hospital.

Tobia said it wasn?t clear whether the man was injured as a result of the crash or just had a medical emergency. He was in serious condition.

Hazardous-materials crews were called to the scene to contain fuel that was leaking from the aircraft, which authorities described as homemade or experimental.

The crash temporarily shut down the Baltimore-Washington Parkway southbound at Route 198 and northbound at Route 197.

Calls to Dean?s house were not returned.
