Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson said he thought Aleppo was an acronym when he was asked about the city at the center of the Syrian civil war on Thursday.
“Well, I was thinking acronym when he said Aleppo. Guilty. No excuse whatsoever,” explained Johnson during a Thursday afternoon interview on Fox News. The Libertarian candidate responded “What is Aleppo?” when asked how he would respond to the city’s growing crisis while on MSNBC in the morning.
Responding to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s crack that “You can find Aleppo on the map,” Johnson responded she might have her geography and the names correct, but said her foreign policy response is wrong because it is based on encouraging “regime change that in my lifetime has just not worked out.”
When asked whether he believed his mistake would mark the end of his presidential campaign, Johnson said “If it is kissing my chances goodbye, so be it.”
“I’m going to make mistakes going forward also. I would make mistakes as president of the United States, but I’d be transparent,” said Johnson. “Whether or not that disqualifies me as being president of the United States, that will be for people to determine.”
