COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — The owners of the Palisades nuclear power plant in southwestern Michigan say they plan to hold simulated emergency exercises this week.
MLive.com reports (http://bit.ly/VYtHlG ) the exercises Tuesday at the plant in Van Buren County’s Covert Township include officials from the state of Michigan as well as Allegan, Berrien, and Van Buren counties. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and other federal agencies will evaluate the response.
On Friday, the NRC and others will have a briefing at the Van Buren County Emergency Operations Center to provide preliminary results of the evaluations.
New Orleans-based Entergy Corp. says such emergency exercises are held every two years.
The Palisades plant has been designated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as one of the nation’s four worst-performing nuclear plants.
