Old buildings in need of repair.

It?s a special problem requiring creative and innovative solutions and that?s what sparked Peter Emmons toestablish Structural Group in Baltimore.

Management at Structural Group consider themselves specialists engaged in the delicate task of preserving, repairing and reinforcing a structure or building that could be hundreds of years old.

Structural Group consists of three companies ? Structural Preservation Systems, a specialty contractor focusing on structural repair, maintenance, waterproofing, geotechnical construction, and strengthening services; VSL, a design, manufacturing, and installer of post-tensioning and specialty reinforcement systems; and Pullman Power, a chimney, silo, and stack design, construction, maintenance and repair company.

Revenue for Structural Group has grown from less than $10 million in the mid-1980s to about $320 million last year, according to company documents.

Structural Group was recently ranked 21st in the list of Top 600 Specialty Contractors by Engineering New-Record magazine, up from 37th last year.

The company specializes in older buildings, which include old industrial smokestacks, bridges built centuries ago piece by piece in stone or an old factory where wear and tear has taken a toll, said Brian P. Gallagher Vice President of Structural Group.

“We do historical structures were a lot more attention must be focused on the structure,” Gallagher said.

Any motorists driving on Interstate 95 in Baltimore has seen the large white smoke stack with the word “BALTIMORE” crawling up the side. Structural Preservation handled its repairs. It has done reinforcement work at Constellation Energy utility plants.

At Cardinal Gibbons High School in Baltimore, Structural Group attacked repairs needed at the fine arts building. The building was formerly known as St. Mary?s Industrial School and it served as an institution for delinquents and orphan boys, including baseball great Babe Ruth.

“We were very pleased with the work performed by Structural Preservation Systems,” said Kevin Strong, president of Cardinal Gibbons High School in Baltimore.

The building was originally constructed in the late 1800s and had been poorly maintained since the 1960s. Work included installing reinforced steel to corner pieces. Matching mold forms of existing corner pieces were necessary.
