Rams’ Odell Beckham is ‘on standby’ for child’s birth just before Super Bowl

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. could miss playing in his first Super Bowl, taking place Sunday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

In the hours leading up to the NFL championship game, Beckham remains on call as he and his girlfriend, Lauren Wood, are expecting their son.

“I’m on standby,” Beckham said during a press conference early in the week, adding that he thinks God has a different plan. “I don’t need it during the Super Bowl. I want to be able to see my child being born, so I’m on watch. I’m on standby.”

Beckham told reporters being in the Super Bowl while expecting a child is “a lot of blessings all in at one time.”

“I have a great support system,” Beckham said. “You know, my lady helps me a lot with that, and she’s like … ‘You focus on winning. … I got this.’ … I want to be there. So, it hasn’t been easy.”

The decision may be further complicated by added incentives for the wide receiver to play in the Super Bowl. According to NBC Sports’s Pro Football Talk, Beckham would receive an additional $500,000 if the Rams lose and $1 million if they win — but Beckham must be on the active game-day roster to receive the money.

Beckham’s name appeared on the Los Angeles Rams’ Super Bowl roster Sunday morning.
