Georgia Democratic Rep. John Lewis now admits he didn’t attend former President George W. Bush’s first inauguration but says: “President Bush is a friend of mine.”
“We didn’t attend it like so many other members of Congress didn’t, but President Bush is a friend of mine,” Lewis told reporters Tuesday.
That statement was an acknowledgement that Lewis was wrong to claim several days ago that President-elect Trump’s inauguration would be the first he would boycott.
“I don’t plan to attend the inauguration,” Lewis said Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press, speaking about Trump. “It will be the first one that I miss since I’ve been in the Congress.”
Those comments provoked a feud between Trump and Lewis.
After it was pointed out that Lewis also sat out Bush’s first inauguration, Trump tweeted Tuesday: “John Lewis said about my inauguration, ‘It will be the first one that I’ve missed.’ WRONG (or lie)!” Trump tweeted. “He boycotted Bush 43 also because he ‘thought it would be hypocritical to attend Bush’s swearing-in … he doesn’t believe Bush is the true elected president.’ Sound familiar!”
