Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wis., argued Thursday that it would be “appropriate” to begin impeachment proceedings against Attorney General Jeff Sessions if the Trump administration refuses to remove him from a future investigation into Russia’s effort to influence the U.S. election.
“It is clear to me, and countless others, that the Trump administration has been compromised by their dealings with the Russian government,” Moore said Thursday. “I do not believe U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has the credibility nor the moral authority to serve as our country’s top law enforcement official, and I call on him to be removed from his post immediately.”
“If the president is unwilling to meet such concern with a transparent investigation conducted by a special prosecutor, I believe it would be appropriate for the House of Representatives to move forward with impeachment proceedings,” she added.
The White House has already indicated it’s not considering removing Sessions from his post, which means Democrats could at some point push for impeachment. However, impeachment is a near impossibility given Republican control of the House and Senate.
Moore and other Democrats slammed Sessions late Wednesday and Thursday after reports Sessions confirmed that he met twice with the Russian ambassador. Sessions had said in January that he had no meetings with any Russian officials, although that was in the context of a question about President Trump’s campaign.
The White House and Sessions have said his meeting with the ambassador involved his role as a senator, not as a campaign surrogate for Trump. But Democrats remain unconvinced.
“My constituents and I continue to be alarmed by the Trump administration’s reluctance to be forthright about their connection to President Vladimir Putin’s regime,” Moore said. “The American people demand and deserve unequivocal certainty about President Trump’s relationship with the Kremlin, including his financial ties and business dealings.”
