Bidens host Easter Egg Roll after two-year COVID-19 hiatus

President Joe Biden welcomed a crowd to the White House on Monday for the first Easter Egg Roll of his administration with a reference to his 2-year-old grandson.

“It means so much to see and hear the children and all the families show up to be here today,” Biden said from the South Portico. “The joy, the laughter, and the occasional, at least with my young grandson, who’s only 2, the occasional, ‘There’s the Easter Bunny’ — a little startled sometimes.”

The president was introduced by his wife, first lady Jill Biden, who cited the event’s “EGGucation” theme, saying, “Learning doesn’t always happen in your classroom.”

The first couple added a sixth grandchild to their brood in 2020 when Hunter Biden and his second wife, Melissa, welcomed son Beau.

An estimated 30,000 guests, including thousands of military families, were expected to take part in the Easter festivities despite the inclement weather, which included an Easter egg hunt and a farm “field trip.” Special guests ranged from The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon and Grammy-winning singer Ciara to Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster.

National Economic Council Director Brian Deese and Republican North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr were spotted cheering on family members rolling hard-boiled eggs with wooden spoons, while Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman appeared less pleased to be at the event. The Senate candidate was photographed standing in the rain with his arms crossed.

Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth was overheard reading a children’s book, sharing that mint chocolate chip ice cream is her favorite flavor. She was followed by the Bidens and Fallon, who each read a picture book, too.

The Easter Egg Roll, a tradition that started in 1878, coincides with the return of White House spring tours. The tours had also been halted because of the pandemic.
