Comer targets Biden-linked think tank where classified documents found

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) is scrutinizing the operations of the think tank where classified documents from the Obama administration were found in President Joe Biden’s office.

Comer sent a letter, obtained by Punchbowl News, to the University of Pennsylvania, which oversees the Penn Biden Center, to request detailed lists of everyone who had access to the Washington, D.C., offices. Another batch of documents was discovered in the garage of Biden’s Delaware home.

“President Biden’s pattern of mishandling classified documents is alarming,” Comer wrote in the letter sent to university President Mary Elizabeth Magill on Wednesday. “The Committee is concerned about who had access to these documents given the Biden family’s financial connections to foreign actors and companies. The Committee requests documents and information related to foreign influence at UPenn and the Penn Biden Center.”

Comer’s attempt to obtain visitor logs from Biden’s Wilmington home was dashed when White House lawyers said no such records exist. The documents allegedly have to do with foreign influence or defense, and Biden would have obtained them when he was vice president.

“The American people deserve to know whether the Chinese Communist Party, through Chinese companies, influenced potential Biden Administration policies with large, anonymous donations to UPenn and the Penn Biden Center,” Comer wrote.

Former President Donald Trump came under fire for having classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, which were discovered during an FBI raid in August. Both Trump’s and Biden’s documents are under the investigation of special counsels appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Comer said his top investigative priority is the Justice Department’s approach to the two document scandals. The White House and top Democrats have accused Republicans of hypocrisy for attacking Biden over his classified documents compared to their reaction to Trump’s documents.

“House Republicans have no credibility,” White House spokesman Ian Sams told reporters on Monday. “Their demands should be met with skepticism, and they should face questions themselves about why they are politicizing this issue and admitting they actually do not care about the underlying classified material.”

Three total caches of classified documents were discovered in Biden’s possession — one in his office at the Penn Biden Center and two at his Delaware home. Attorneys knew about the first batch in November, days before the midterm elections, but it didn’t become public until earlier this month.
