Ilhan Omar deletes tweets attacking Covington student

Freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar is facing backlash on Twitter over her claims about the Covington Catholic High School students involved in a viral interaction with a Native American protester.

In a tweet deleted Wednesday morning, Omar, D-Minn., claimed that the teenage boys from Kentucky chanted “it’s not rape if you enjoy it,” taunted black men in the vicinity, and surrounded Native American elder Nathan Phillips while engaging in racist chants.

Omar also accused Nick Sandmann, the student at the center of the controversy, for hiring a right-leaning public relations firm to deal with the fallout from the episode.

National Review writer David French pointed out that the rape comment did occur — but wasn’t made by a Covington Catholic student. French also noted the Black Hebrew Israelites present at the altercation yelled racist and derogatory comments at the students, not the other way around.

Initial reports about the weekend episode portrayed Sandmann and fellow classmates as taunting and intimidating Phillips while he protested at the Indigenous Peoples March.

Additional footage showing the origins of the confrontation led many initial critics to revise their views and take the blame off of the students.

Despite the new information, Omar continued her attacks on the boys, several of whom wore “Make America Great Again” hats and attire.

One Twitter user pointed out to Ilhan that no video shows any Covington Catholic students engaging in a racist chant, as the congresswoman had asserted in her tweet.
