A super PAC supported by House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., released a new ad Wednesday that attacks Democrats for opposing the increasingly popular Republican tax bill.
The new ad is part of the Conservative Leadership Fund’s ongoing spending against Democrat Conor Lamb in the race to fill the vacant 18th congressional district seat in Pennsylvania. The PAC has poured over $2 million to back Republican Rick Saccone and keep the seat in GOP hands.
In the ad, Mary Beth Cirucci, a widowed mother of two sons from the 18th district, talks about her appreciation for the tax cut and says “every dollar counts,” despite the assertion by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., that the law’s benefits amount to “crumbs” for most taxpayers.
“Being a widow is tough. Raising two teenage sons by myself is even harder,” Cirucci said in the ad. “That’s why I really appreciated the middle-class tax cut.”
“Conor Lamb and Nancy Pelosi called it crumbs. Here’s the truth, Mr. Lamb,” she says. “When you’re a single mom and everything falls on your shoulders, every dollar counts.”
The ad is part of an ongoing effort by Republican groups to improve the standing of the tax law with voters after it started with very low popularity after its passage. According to a new Survey Monkey poll, the tax law is supported by 51 percent of voters, while 46 percent disapprove. That was the first poll to show the law’s popularity climb above 50 percent.
“Not only does Conor Lamb continue to side with Nancy Pelosi over Pennsylvania families, he also continues to mock hardworking families by calling a $2,900 tax cut ‘crumbs,’” said Corry Bliss, CLF’s executive director.
“For families like Mary Beth’s, this much-needed tax relief is welcome news because every dollar counts when raising a family,” Bliss said. “By mimicking Nancy Pelosi’s offensive talking points, Conor Lamb continues to show that he is out of touch and too liberal for PA-18 families and their values.”
The contest to replace former Rep. Tim Murphy is set to take place on March 13.
