The owners of the Minnesota Twins released a statement calling George Floyd’s death a “murder” while calling for the “justice” Floyd “and his family deserve.”
“The eyes of the world have been on the Derek Chauvin trial and now the tragic death of Daunte Wright. We are horrified and ashamed that this keeps happening to Black people in our community and many other cities around our country,” the Pohlad family said in a statement released on the Minnesota Twins Twitter account.
“As we await a verdict, we hope and pray our criminal justice system provides the justice George Floyd and his family deserve, though nothing can restore Mr. Floyd’s life or ease the pain of his murder. We also know that whatever the jury decides, there will still be much work to do.”

The comments come as the jury continues to deliberate in an effort to come to a decision on whether to convict former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in Floyd’s death. Chauvin faces charges of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter, he has pleaded not guilty.

As the country awaits a verdict, law enforcement agencies in Minneapolis and in cities around the country have braced for potential social unrest and riots that could follow the announcement. Such riots were widespread following the death of Floyd last May, continuing into this year after cases of multiple high-profile police shootings.
Many Democratic politicians have been speaking out in favor of a guilty verdict, with Rep. Maxine Waters traveling to the city to demand the jury find Chauvin guilty while urging protesters to become even “more confrontational” if they do not get that outcome.

Former President Barack Obama and President Joe Biden have also chimed in on the trial, with Obama calling Chauvin a murderer and Biden saying he hopes the jury comes to the “right verdict.”
“I’m praying the verdict is the right verdict, which I think it’s overwhelming in my view,” Biden said.
