Drama of local family?s house hunt goes national

Two local English professors at Anne Arundel Community Collegeare ready to buy their first house with their twin 2-year-old boys ? on national TV.

Steven Canaday, Suzanne Spoor and their sons Zachary and Tyler will represent the average young family on Home & Garden Television?s popular “House Hunters” show this Thursday at 10 p.m.

“I didn?t expect it to be as grueling as it was,” Canaday said about the twenty hours of filming in one weekend. He added that he has a lot more respect for actors now.

“The show focuses on the emotional feeling of buying a new house,” said Emily Yarborough, HGTV spokeswoman.

After their family expanded, Canaday, 38, and Spoor, 40, realized they needed more room than what their Crofton town house provided, Canaday said.

“We?ve kind of been students all our lives and have been in all kinds of rentals over the years,” Canaday said. “They are a fun, eloquent and adorable family with the cutest twins,” said Amy Juras from Champion Realty, the featured local agent.

After being shown about 40 houses, three of which are included on the show, the couple settled on one with a 2.5-acre wooded lot that?s across the street from waterfront homes in Annapolis, Canaday said. Juras said it costs between $450,000 and $500,000.

“The biggest problem with this couple was what?s behind door number two,” said Juras, 43, who?s been an agent for less than three years and is known as the “house huntress” on her Web site.

She said hesitance is a hitch with a lot of people because there are so many houses on the market now.

“After a while you just got giddy,” Canaday said. “Because you just go into room after room and there?s only so much you can say about a living room. I have a feeling it?s going to be humiliating. All my friends are ready to make fun of me.”
