President Trump and Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari did not discuss derogatory comments Trump reportedly made about African nations earlier this year, the presidents said Monday.
Buhari was asked during a joint press conference with Trump for his response to remarks the president made during a meeting with senators in January, during which Trump reportedly referred to some African nations, Haiti, and El Salvador as “shithole countries.”
“We didn’t discuss it. And you do have some countries that are in very bad shape and very tough places to live in,” Trump said. “But we didn’t discuss it, because the president knows me, and he knows where I’m coming from and I appreciate that. We did not discuss it.”
Buhari, meanwhile, said he was unsure if reports regarding Trump’s remarks were accurate.
“The best thing for me is to keep quiet,” he added.
