USA soccer team wins Women’s World Cup after Trump antagonist Rapinoe opens scoring

The United States women’s soccer team won the Women’s World Cup final Sunday after defeating the Netherlands 2-0.

Megan Rapinoe, who spent parts of the tournament feuding with President Trump, scored the first goal of the game via a penalty kick in the 61st minute. The penalty kick was awarded after Netherlands player Stefanie van der Gragt was given a yellow card, following a review, for a dangerous foul in the box.

Rose Lavelle tacked on an insurance goal minutes later.

Rapinoe and teammate Alex Morgan led the team in scoring, with each scoring six goals throughout the tournament. Both stars faced controversies as well during their time at the Women’s World Cup.

Rapinoe got into hot water after saying she’s “not going to the f—— White House” if they were to win the trophy. Trump responded to the comments saying that they should win the tournament before commenting on whether or not she’d attend a visit to the White House.

Then, Morgan faced backlash for celebrating the deciding goal in the U.S.’s semifinal match against England by pretending to sip tea with her pinky up. Many took exception, saying the display was inappropriate, but she stood by it.

“You see men celebrating all around the world in big tournaments, you know, grabbing their sacks, or whatever it is,” Morgan said, earlier this week after being asked about the backlash. “And when I look at sipping a cup of tea, I’m a little taken aback. And you have to laugh about it to see all the criticism.”

In every Women’s World Cup the U.S. has advanced to the semifinals. This is the team’s fourth World Cup championship, having won in 1991, 1999, and in 2015.
