‘This was a suicide mission’: Alleged Paul Pelosi attacker had a list of other people he wanted to target

Prosecutors in San Francisco, California, released new details via a court filing Tuesday on the assault on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi‘s husband, Paul Pelosi.

During the break-in early Friday morning, the intruder asked Pelosi if his wife was second in line for the presidency, then stated that “we’ve got to take them all out,” saying various public officials were all corrupt, per the court filing.

The alleged attacker, David DePape, had a list of other people he wanted to target, including “a local professor, several prominent state and federal politicians, and relatives of those state and federal politicians,” according to the filing.

DePape also told authorities his motivation for breaking into the Pelosi residence was the “insane f***ing level of lies coming out of Washington, D.C.” after he struck Pelosi with a hammer.

“I came here to have a little chat with his wife,” DePape said to authorities, per the filing. “I didn’t really want to hurt him, but you know this was a suicide mission. I’m not going to stand here and do nothing even if it cost me my life.”

DePape pleaded not guilty Tuesday to multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, residential burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder, and threats to a public official. He is currently being held without bail.

Paul Pelosi was hospitalized from injuries sustained when DePape allegedly struck his head with a hammer, receiving treatment for a “skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands,” according to a spokesperson for the House speaker. Nancy Pelosi said Monday that her husband was “making steady progress” but that it would be a “long recovery process.”
