Macron and his wife, Brigitte, greeted Trump right out of his limousine. The two world leaders shook hands, but Macron held on. Trump made a 45-degree turn, pointing to the other side of the vehicle where first lady Melania Trump was likely exiting.
Macron continued to clasp Trump’s right hand, only letting go a few seconds later. Trump then greeted Macron’s wife with an awkward hug and a hand clasp.
Trump’s visit to France comes exactly a year after a terrorist used a commercial truck to plow into a crowd at a Bastille Day celebration in Nice, France, killing 86 people.
