Conservative columnist Mona Charen said she was privately praised by a fellow panelist after she bashed President Trump and conservatives for behaving like “hypocrites” on women’s issues at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Saturday.
Charen stunned the crowd when she said conservatives are “look[ing] the other way” when it comes to Trump and Republican men who have been accused of mistreating women.
Charen had to be escorted out of the building by security after her comments were met with heavy boos, but she said several people came up to her after to praise what she had said, including one of the other women on the panel.
“Two or three people in the lobby who were wearing CPAC lanyards around their necks gave me thumbs up signs,” Charen told “The Daily,” a podcast by the New York Times. “No one approached me in any sort of hostile way at all. But as I was about to get into the car, a woman called out my name, ran over, and she said, ‘That was really brave.’ It turned out she was one of my fellow panelists.”
Podcast host Michael Barbaro said it was interesting that the unnamed panelist chose to make the remark to Charen privately rather than defend Charen on stage.
“Right, well, I’m glad she said it,” Charen said. “I’ll just leave it at that.”
Charen spoke on the panel about the #MeToo movement with The Daily Signal’s Kelsey Harkness and West Virginia State Rep. Kayla Kessinger. Marji Ross moderated the panel.
