Uber Eats driver stole dog after dropping off pizza, woman claims

A New York woman claims an Uber Eats driver stole her dog after delivering food to her apartment on Saturday night.

Melanie Polanco of Brooklyn, New York, says the driver took off with her 6-month-old cocker spaniel-poodle mix, Ella, and video surveillance from her building captured the dognapper’s escape, according to PIX11.

“I don’t think he came to steal a dog, but he saw her [and] she’s very cute,” Polanco said, adding Ella is “worth $5,000.”

“It could be grand larceny,” Polanco said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. All I’m thinking about is Ella. I need Ella back.”

Polanco said Ella likely escaped while the door was open and that it took her a while to realize the dog was missing, as she thought Ella was in another room. She then contacted the building supervisor and viewed the video camera footage.

“I was crying. I was devastated. She’s gone,” Polanco told the outlet. “I couldn’t eat or sleep that night. She’s probably scared, alone.”

After viewing the surveillance footage, Polanco filed a police report with both the New York Police Department and Uber Eats, according to the outlet.

A spokesperson from the company told Polanco on Monday evening the driver denied he had the dog, according to the outlet.

“What the customer reported is deeply disturbing and unacceptable,” a spokesperson for Uber Eats said in a statement, adding the company is “continuing to look into” the matter and has “removed this driver’s access to the platform,” the report said.
