Poll: Clinton up double digits in Pennsylvania

A new poll shows Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton is headed for a big win in Pennsylvania next Tuesday, exactly one week after her decisive victory in New York’s Democratic primary.

According to a Monmouth University poll released Wednesday, Clinton leads rival Bernie Sanders by 13 percentage points in the Keystone State, 52-39 percent.

The former secretary of state, who carried nearly 60 percent of the Democratic vote in her adopted home state on Tuesday, leads Sanders by nearly 30 percentage points among women in Pennsylvania, and has a 24-point edge among voters age 50 and older.

Meanwhile, the Vermont senator has a nine-point advantage over Clinton among men and leads her by two percentage points among voters age 50 and under.

“After her win in New York this week, these numbers in nearby Pennsylvania suggest that the entire Northeast is looking pretty good for the Clinton campaign,” Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth Polling Institute, said in a press release.

A greater percentage of Pennsylvania Democrats would also be more inclined to stick with their party come November if Clinton is the nominee.

The poll finds that 81 percent of Democratic voters in the state would cast their ballots for Clinton in a general election, while 11 percent would vote for Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump. If Sanders secures the nomination, 78 percent of Democrats in Pennsylvania would vote for him, while 11 percent would support Trump.

The Monmouth University survey of 302 Pennsylvania voters was conducted between April 17-19. Results contain a margin of error plus or minus 5.6 percent.
