Candace Owens defends calling Trump a ‘feminist icon’

Political commentator Candace Owens has doubled down on her stance calling former President Donald Trump a “feminist icon” for his stance on transgender women playing in women’s sports.

After Trump blasted President Biden’s stance of allowing transgender women to compete in athletic events against biological women, saying the policy would “destroy women’s sports” during remarks at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Sunday, Owens tweeted her support for Trump as a “feminist icon.”

TRUMP BLASTS TRANSGENDER WOMEN COMPETING AGAINST BIOLOGICAL FEMALES IN SPORTS

“If you guys are wondering what actual feminism is, it’s Donald Trump having the courage to stand up on stage and call out the insanity of biological men dominating women’s sports,” she wrote Sunday night. “He never kowtows to the Left.”

Owens’s comments quickly ignited a firestorm on Twitter. Liberal radio host Bishop Talbert Swan called Owens “trash” in a tweet on Monday.

James Kosur, senior adviser to the anti-Trump political action committee Really American, accused Owens of being a drifter.

Right-wing personalities defended Owens, with Foundation for Liberty and American Greatness Founder Nick Adams saying the backlash is a result of the fact that Owens “speaks the truth in an eloquent way that [the media and establishment] can’t compete with.”

Brigitte Gabrielle, founder of anti-terrorist organization ACT for America, echoed Adams’s sentiment, saying the media “can’t handle” how Owens “tells the truth.”

Owens herself weighed in on the controversy by reiterating her initial analysis in a series of tweets on Monday.

“I’m trending right now and would like to publicly offer a non-apology for having stated the obvious: people purporting to be feminists that have not spoken out against the trans agenda currently eating women’s rights—are frauds,” she wrote Monday afternoon. “Biological men have no place in women’s sports.”

Minutes later, Owens added that Trump “is more of a feminist icon than any woman breathing who works to legitimatize the diabolical effort from the LGBT community to erase what it means to be a woman.”

The ongoing debate over transgender women athletes competing against biological females in sports tournaments has faced renewed scrutiny given Democrats’ moves to cement protections for transgender individuals. Merrick Garland, Biden’s nominee to serve as attorney general, dodged the controversial political subject when asked about transgender athletes during his Senate confirmation hearing.

“I think every human being should be treated with dignity and respect,” he said. “The particular question of how Title IX applies in schools … is something that I would have to look at when I have the chance to do that. I’ve not had the chance to consider these kinds of issues in my career so far.”

On Thursday, the House sought to codify the Biden administration’s planned protections by passing the Equality Act, which would prohibit discrimination against people based on sexual orientation and gender identity, over sharp objections from Republicans who argued the measure would serve to disadvantage biological females.

“[Republicans’] attacks on trans people and the transgender community are just mean. Mean!” Sen. Chuck Schumer said in a press conference with Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday. “Their despicable comments just make my blood boil with anger.”

Schumer promised to bring the Equality Act up for a vote in his chamber but declined to elaborate on a timeline, except to say that it would be brought up for a vote “at exactly the right time.”
