US airstrikes sent large plumes of smoke into the sky on Saturday over the Syrian border town of Kobani. Kurdish fighters and Islamic State group militants are batting for control of the border town. (Oct. 18)

STORYLINE:

US airstrikes sent large plumes of smoke into the sky on Saturday over the Syrian border town of Kobani.

People could be heard cheering and applauding following the strikes.

Kurdish fighters and Islamic State (IS) group militants are batting for control of the border town.

Kobani is now a ghost town: the United Nations estimates that fewer than 700 of its residents remain as its people flee to safety in Turkey.
