House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer wants the White House to hold a meeting with Maryland legislators and other East Coast officials to prepare them for the possibility that oil will hit the state’s coast.
“With the onset of hurricane season, and reported estimates of the size of the spill more than doubling recently, it is my hope that you will hear directly from officials in my home state of Maryland and all along the Atlantic Coast about their levels of preparedness and information needs,” Hoyer wrote in a letter to President Obama on Wednesday.
The letter comes two days after Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler joined the oil debate by signing a letter with 11 other East Coast attorneys general asking BP to pay for environmental and economic damage, should the oil creep up the coast.
