A conservative Alabama House member doubts Obamacare repeal will happen due to raucous town halls.
“Across the country I see a lot of weak-kneed Republicans right now, particularly on the Senate side but also on the House side,” said Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., on a radio interview Thursday on WBHP in Huntsville, Ala.
Brooks’ remarks comes as Republican lawmakers across the country are facing crowds at town halls with constituents primarily angry over the fate of Obamacare.
“There are a significant number of congressmen who are being impacted by these protests and their spine is a little bit weak,” Brooks said. “I don’t know if we are gonna be able to repeal Obamacare now.”
Brooks was dismayed there was no “counter effort to steel the spine of these congressmen in tossups.”
Brooks’ comments come as Republicans aim to move forward on Obamacare repeal in the next few weeks.
A leaked draft of legislation dated Feb. 10 would roll back the law’s Medicaid expansion, mandates and taxes and cap the tax break on employer health plan premiums.
President Trump and other Republicans have derided the protesters as paid and not representative of Republican districts, but other lawmakers have said they reflect genuine concern on healthcare.
