One dead, 108 injured after NJ train crashes into Hoboken station

One person was killed when a New Jersey Transit train crashed into a station at Hoboken Thursday during morning commute hours. At least 108 others were injured.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced Thursday at a news conference that the person who died was a woman who was standing on the platform and was struck by debris. He also said that 108 people were injured.

The crash led to the shutdown of all service there, and prompted the federal government to send investigators.

The person killed in the crash was standing on the platform when the train came into the station, according to CNN. The train engineer is now hospitalized after being unresponsive when removed from the train.

Early pictures from the accident showed serious damage to the train and extensive structural damage to the station.

Several passengers tweeted they felt “lucky to be alive.”

According to witnesses, the train slammed into a barrier marks the track’s end. The train then went airborne and went through a passenger concourse at about 8:45 a.m.

Four law enforcement officers told NBC New York that preliminary reports suggest the crash was an accident or caused by operator error, but stressed the investigation is still very early.

An earlier version of this story said three people were dead and up to 100 injured.
