Sixth-grade student in custody after three wounded in Idaho middle school shooting

A sixth-grade female student is in custody in connection to a shooting incident at an eastern Idaho middle school that left three wounded on Thursday.

Beginning at approximately 9:08 a.m., the student pulled a handgun from her backpack and fired multiple shots both while inside and outside the school, Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson said at a press conference Thursday.

Two people were shot in the school hallway before the girl went outside and shot another, Anderson said, adding that she was subsequently disarmed by a female teacher, who held her until police arrived. The injured include two students and a custodian.

Dr. Michael Lemon, who is trauma medical director at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, said all three victims received non-life-threatening injuries to their extremities. The adult was been treated and released, he said, and the two children are in fair condition and will be monitored overnight.

The shooting occurred in Rigby, a small town near Yellowstone National Park.

“Today, we had the worst nightmare a school district could encounter. We had a school shooting here at Rigby Middle School,” Jefferson School District Superintendent Chad Martin said. “What we know so far is the shooter has been apprehended. There is no further threat to the students.”

“I am praying for the lives and safety of those involved in today’s tragic events,” Gov. Brad Little wrote in a tweet early Thursday afternoon. “Thank you to our law enforcement agencies and school leaders for their efforts in responding to the incident. I am staying updated on the situation.”
