SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — The New York City Ballet’s annual upstate summer sojourn will be another week shorter next year.
Officials at Saratoga Performing Arts Center announced Thursday that the ballet company’s residency at the Saratoga Springs venue will be reduced from two weeks to one week in 2013. The ballet’s longtime three-week season was shortened to two weeks in 2009.
SPAC (spak) President Marcia White blames finances for the decision to stage just a week of performances next summer. SPAC and the ballet company have had financial problems in recent years, and the upstate organization relies on fundraising to cover a major part of the expense of hosting the dance troupe.
White says funding from private and public sources had dried up.
The New York City Ballet has performed at SPAC every summer since 1966.
