Winter Restaurant Week entices foodies

Baltimore is serving up some of the best dishes around for Winter Restaurant Week.

“Food is the primary thing that draws people into the city. If you are a visitor, one of the top things you do while you are here is go out to eat,” said Mike Evitts, spokesperson for Downtown Partnership. “We wanted to find a way to recognize the importance of food to Baltimore residents and visitors, and help foster Baltimore?s growing epicurian culture.”

The first-ever Baltimore Winter Restaurant Week, which is orchestrated by the Downtown Partnership and Baltimore Area Convention and Visitors Association, takes place from Jan. 28 to Feb. 3. The 80 restaurants participating in the event are offering special three-course dinner prix fixe menus for $30.08, and some will offer three-course lunch prix fixe menus for $20.08.

“The addition of a Winter Restaurant Week to our marketing efforts allows us to offer winter visitors something new and exciting this year,” said Tom Noonan, BACVA president and CEO. “Winter Restaurant Week will serve as the centerpiece of our winter marketing campaign, providing a platform to once again shine the spotlight on Baltimore?s diverse dining options.”

The winter week was planned after the huge success of the two previous Summer Restaurant Weeks, which saw record numbers, according to OpenTable.com, an online reservation system. In its first year, 2006, Baltimore Restaurant Week had the highest number of daily reservations of any first-year week promotion, at 1,538. This summer?s week exceeded daily reservations by more than 100 percent, reaching 3,441.

“Two summers ago, the Partnership and BACVA launched the first Baltimore Restaurant Week and were blown away both by the number of restaurants that participated and the number of people who took advantage of the promotion,” said Downtown Partnership President Kirby Fowler. “This past summer, we did even better by nearly doubling the number of participating restaurants and reservations. At the encouragement of area restaurants, we?re building on this success by expanding Baltimore Restaurant Week into the winter.”
