A double rainbow greeted the swelling crowds outside Buckingham Palace just before the announcement of Queen Elizabeth II‘s death on Thursday.
The queen, the United Kingdom’s longest-reigning monarch, died at 96 after serving 70 years on the throne. The double rainbow was first spotted as people gathered after the palace announced on Thursday morning that the queen was under medical supervision in her Scotland home, Balmoral Castle.

After her death was announced, reports say there was a hush, followed by people began singing “God Save the Queen,” per the New York Times.
Upon the queen’s death, her eldest son, Charles, became King Charles III. He released a statement stating that this is a “moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.”
“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother,” the king’s statement reads. “I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country.”
