‘Failed coup’: Libertarian Party refutes Virginia party branch dissolving itself

Disillusioned by the trajectory of the national party, the Libertarian Party of Virginia voted to dissolve itself on Sunday, but now the national party is contending that it lacked the authority to do that.

The Libertarian National Committee has reportedly refrained from recognizing the disaffiliation of its Virginia branch and is mulling possible litigation as it questions the legitimacy of the Sunday vote.

“The remaining Virginia LP board members have handled a failed attack on their affiliate with class, resolve, and level-headedness. Thank you for your hard work. I think a membership drive will be in order soon,” LNC Chairwoman Angela McArdle declared on Twitter.

Her remarks came in response to a tweet from the Libertarian Party of Virginia Twitter account thanking the national party parliamentarian “for looking into the failed coup in VA.” A vote to dissolve the Virginia party branch reportedly occurred during a virtual board meeting.

Virginia Libertarian Party Chairwoman Holly Ward raised concerns with other chapters of the Libertarian Party and fretted that the party would struggle to recruit quality candidates against the backdrop of a sagging reputation.

Recently, the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire, known for trafficking in outrage, tweeted a picture of Meghan McCain mourning the death of her late father Sen. John McCain by his casket on the four-year anniversary of his death. The photo was accompanied by the phrase “Happy Holidays” and fomented sharp outrage online from across the political spectrum.

“I am certainly not going to be a fraud and take members’ money and promise them something and not be able to deliver, and I’m certainly not going to deliver candidates who believe in repealing the Civil Rights Act,” Ward proclaimed, per the Associated Press.

“There is just one problem: that statute provides for the dissolution of a corporation by a board of directors only if there is no membership or voting membership which could take the action to dissolve. Yet, the Libertarian Party of Virginia absolutely has a voting membership,” the national party parliamentarian wrote. “It is, therefore, my opinion that the resolution of dissolution … is null and void and of no effect.”

Ward acknowledged that she has heard whispers that legal action could be brought against the Virginia chapter but has argued such a challenge would lack merit, per the Associated Press. The Washington Examiner reached out to the LNC for comment.
