Fenty to host online ‘Webinar’ chat forum and lay out policy

Democratic mayoral candidate Adrian Fenty will host an online chat today with core supporters to discuss his transition plans and lay out his draft policies.

Never mind that Fenty has not yet been elected mayor. The polls don’t open until Tuesday, but Fenty, the overwhelming favorite, is carrying his so-called pre-transition plan out with today’s “Webinar.”

“We’re letting the people know what great new ideas I’ve come up with and will put forward in my administration if I’m elected Tuesday,” Fenty said Friday during the DC Politics Hour with Kojo and Jonetta on WAMU. “It’s an efficient way for me to talk to 1,000 District residents.”

During the Webinar, Fenty will use the Internet to lay our for his team and core supporters his draft policy papers on everything from education and health care to public safety and housing. The subsequent online chat is designed not only to obtain recommendations and opinions on policy, but also on who to hire and other transition-related activities, the candidate said.

The event is the “culmination of our best practices tour,” Fenty said, speaking to his visits to several big U.S. cities — New York, Chicago, Baltimore, Los Angeles and San Francisco — to meet with mayors and their key deputies.

“This city, if we’re going to move forward, we’ve got to study best practices,” Fenty said. “It’s not enough to be better than where we were before. We’ve got to strive to be the best city in the country, in fact, the world.”

The Webinar, Fenty told The Examiner, “will be a core part of how we’re going to run our transition,” taking his policies straight to the people rather than into closed-door meetings. More are to come.

But first, he must face his opponents, Republican Dave Kranich and Statehood Green Chris Otten, in the general election. At this point in the campaign, Fenty said, “it’s all organizing.”

“We’ll put two to three people in every precinct throughout the city, and just remind everybody to come out on Election Day,” he said during the radio program.
