Flynn retains new attorney after firing lawyers last week

Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser for President Trump, has retained Sidney Powell as his new attorney after firing his previous lawyers last week, according to a new report.

Powell, a former federal prosecutor, is now a regular guest on Fox News, a critic of the Trump-Russia investigation, and author.

Powell told Hill TV that Flynn “is going to continue to cooperate with the government pursuant to his plea agreement.”

“I’m honored to be representing General Flynn, who I’ve long considered an American hero,” Powell said.

Flynn was swept up in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and pleaded guilty in December 2017 for lying to the FBI about his conversations with then-Russian ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak.

Powell had previously expressed support for Flynn, tweeting in April that “#Flynn should be exonerated and the case dismissed for #EgregiousGovernmentMisconduct” and “the spying on #Flynn… was part of a set-up” in May.

Powell is a strident critic of Mueller and his special counsel team, writing in April that “even though Mr. Mueller and his hitsquad of Trump-haters found no collusion and no obstruction, the Mueller report will be Mr. Weissmann’s narrative of what they want the public to believe.”

Flynn had been represented by attorneys Robert Kelner and Stephen Anthony, but last Thursday, they informed the court that Flynn notified them he is terminating Covington & Burling as his counsel and had already retained new representation.

Flynn was originally scheduled to be sentenced in December 2018, but that has been postponed by the judge until Flynn has finished cooperating with Mueller’s probe.

Although Mueller’s investigation has concluded and his report has been submitted, Flynn may still be called on to testify against two former business partners currently charged with crimes related to lobbying for Turkey.

Powell’s office did not immediately respond to a Washington Examiner request for comment.
