SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Sun-Times won sweepstakes awards for stories and photos in the Illinois Associated Press Media Editors annual news contest for a multimedia package about the aftermath of the slaying of a Chicago teenager.
Among medium-sized papers, The Northwest Herald in Crystal Lake won both editorial and photo sweepstakes awards, while The Register-Mail in Galesburg took editorial and photo sweepstakes awards in the small newspaper division.
The winners were announced Thursday at the IAPME and Illinois Press Association annual convention.
IAPME, a professional organization for newspaper members of The Associated Press cooperative, elected Sun-Times Publisher/Editor-in-Chief Jim Kirk president for 2014-15. Newly elected to the IAPME board were Angie Muhs, incoming executive editor of The State Journal-Register in Springfield, and Kate Schott, editor of The Herald-News in Joliet and Morris Daily Herald.
The sweepstakes winners cap the annual news contest — a single sweepstakes winner is chosen from among all first-place entries in each size division of the contest. Other winners were previously announced.
